You Wanna Fight? PS3 vs. All Comers.

Link Back To Game Talk

Yesterday GameDailyBiz's James Brightman opined that the Sony's PlayStation3 will "not lose next-generation war" He mentioned all these reasons it won't lose even in the face of a disastrous last few months.

While this is a good piece and James is a good guy (I had lunch with him today) he is wrong.  Sony is going to fail and fail badly.   I am going to counter point his points and chime in myself.

His main reasons are as follows;
1.  The Brand.  Sony has the market with its old console the PS2 and people don't like change.
2.  Microsoft Squandered its Lead.  He says MS Xbox 360 has been out and should have smoked PS3 and didn't.  He indicates it’s because there are not many killer games (like Halo 3)
3. Japan is Ripe For the Taking.  Basically, Mr. Brightman believes that it was Microsoft's job to kick the tail off Sony and they haven't done it.  Finally, that the winner will need to control all international markets. (Asia, Europe and US)
4.  Blu-Ray Will Matter.  On top of the console wars there is a battle of formats for the high end DVD.  Blu-ray is Sony's entry and will be packaged with PS3.
5. Free Online. Xbox Live is a subscription service offered by MS while Sony's offering will be free.  The contention is that people will flock to the free stuff.

Nice fun video of them all fighting (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft)

1. The Brand.  Yes, it’s Sony and yes everyone already owns a PS2.  So what?  Microsoft and Nintendo AREN'T big brands?  I don'tunderstand why James thinks this will make a difference.  We are talking about companies whose names are synonymous with computing, gaming and entertainment.
In the case of Nintendo, it could be argued that they have the bigger brand as they produce gaming devices and ONLY gaming devices.  Nintendo MEANS games!  I mean, Who remembers the first Sony video game they played?  Everyone remembers Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.  Nintendo wins this category HANDS DOWN.

2. Microsoft Squandered Its Lead.
and 3.
Japan Is Ripe For the Taking
Oh did it?  How can anyone say they had a lead when they were the third group into the gaming space behind Nintendo and Sony?  They are laying the ground work with their consoles and are getting better. Look, compared to the US, Japan is nothing.  If Japan were such a big deal then why would Sony be cutting the number of consoles on launch day to 80,000 compared to the US 400,000?  It's not that big a deal after all is it?  Oh and what about Europe?  Oh that’s right; Sony isn't even SHIPPING TO Europe at launch.  This is a big shopping season and when people go to the stores DON'T find their precious PS3 they are going to buy something else.  Sony is leaving people no other choice but to buy an Xbox 360 or a Wii.
More on Japan, Nintendo will still throw down with its cut price Wii and innovative design.  Additionally, the Nintendo DS is a killer little hand-held for a cheap price.  Sony is going to face sever shortages and leave the original gaming top dog, Nintendo there reap the benefits of their mistakes.  Sony is probably in the weakest position in years.

4. Blu-Ray Will Matter Umm, how about this?  No it won't.  There are already devices being made that will play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray so that little exclusive is out the window.  As for the space on the actual disks, what’s the big deal if you have to use more than one disk?  Wasn't it Sony who taught us that a game can be on more than one disk?  I am sure the HD-DVD will have plenty of room for good games.  Good games aren't about length, or ABSURD graphics, they are about being playable and fun.  It will be the rare game that utilizes all that disk space.  Also, whose to say that games simply won't be downloaded on to some expandable hard rive anyway?  Blue-Ray won't matter.  Do you see Nintendo worried about it?  They know a thing or two about consoles.

5.  Free Online People are used to paying online and don't mind it.  Xbox Live already has 4,000,000 subscribers and is working for them.  Also, Sony may say its going to free for now, but THERE IS NO WAY, it will stay free.  The way things are today, no company offers things for free.  It will be loaded with some sort of revenue generating system.  It will either be pay for play or micro-transactions.  The fact is Sony has said a lot of things during the development of the PS3 and been unable to deliver.  While I am sure there online component will start free, they will find that it simply is not feasible.  Sony will toe the line and charge for its online component eventually that and it will never be able to catch up with Microsoft in this regard.

My Conclusions

Listen folks, I am no insider, nor am I a crazy gamer nerd.  I am just a regular guy who likes games, sports and his momma.  From everything I have read, Sony is in deep trouble.  The overall health of the company has a direct affect on how they conduct business.  Sony will not be able to back it next-generation console until it gets out of its exploding battery mess and production issues.  It’s very difficult to win a war when you simply do not have the consoles available for people to buy?  Sony will not be able to market its devices nor will it be able to cut its prices for years to come.  Just what will Sony do if for instance, Microsoft cuts the price of the Xbox?  Or Nintendo lowers theirs?  Sony’s PS3 is listed at SIX-HUNDRED DOLLARS!  That friends is a hell of a lot of cash, think about it?  If you are one of the blessed souls who gets a PS3 and then buys say 2 games?  You know how much you are throwing down? Close to a GRAND! FOR A FREAKING GAME SYSTEM!  No way, Sony is going down and going down hard.

If only you knew what you were talkiong about I would really think about what you are staying... but the truth is you don't. And in no review have I ever read that Sony is in trouble with the PS3. Your counter arguements to James Brightman's points are just your personal opinion and have no credibility. Should you chose to share your "EXPERT" opinion on the internet where millions of people can read it.... DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST!!!

I'm just saying :-)

Well, well!  You have an opinion too!  You think I don't know what I am talking about! The fact is, I have researched and been reading every ounce of news on all three consoles.
The facts are Sony has bungled the launch for the PS3 severely.  Some of the issues they are having were quite unforeseen, I mean, who expects a whole line of laptop batteries to explode?  But some of are of their own doing.  They are rushing their console out the door without enough units to make a difference.
When Joe Regular game player finds out that the PS3 is out, and they go to the store and don't find it, they are going to have to make a decision.  Either waits for who knows how long and go home empty handed or buy Xbox 360.  It’s a simply case of supply and demand.  Think about it?  It's Christmas and little Timmy goes to Daddy and says he wants and Sony PS3 and Daddy can't find it.  What's Dad going to do?  Come home empty handed?  I doubt it! He'll buy SOMETHING!  What it is, I don't know, but it won't be a PS3, BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ANY!

you are an idot and dont know what your talking about people will wait and pay 600 bucks because its playstation ,and if daddy comes home wiyh an x box the kid going to be pissed off because he wanted the ps3 not the freaking x box .

Well,  that may well be the case that I am an idiot.  Another case of that being someones opinion.  The thing is,  its about supply and demand,  there simply aren't any PS3's around.  They will be gone on the first day and that will be that.  There was an article I read the other day,  that the blue laser component that makes the PS3 Blu Ray work,  isn't even available for the blu ray players that are supposed to be hitting the market.  Its going to be a quite a while before Sony can change gears and get their production on track.  Until then,  they are going to take a beating.  If in fact "Gears of War" is as good as Halo, as Microsoft says it may be,  then there is going to be serious trouble. The Xbox 360 will have its "killer app" and will fly off the shelves at relatively the same specs at a lower price.  Things just don't seem to be lining up for Sony.  And that is not an opinion,  its a fact.

Do you suppose that someone could ask AOL to fix the daily puzzle in their online games? It has been broken for several days now.

As several have said previously, and I must agree, this will be one of the most interesting console wars ever, and only time will tell the winner. Also, recall, that this is my personal option and absolutely everyone has the right to criticize me but... shot me and call me an idiot, but I’m going out to buy a PS3.
Not when it first comes out mind you, that would be hell for my wallet, but instead I’m going to wait until summer where the price should have shot down. Why would the price go down you may ask? If Sony wants to win this war, they are going to have to cut the price down, I mean 600$, all I say is “ouch!”. Hard core fans will go out and buy the PS3 right away, thousands will get it for Christmas or Hanukah, but the logical thing to do is wait, and this is logical for several reasons. 1- The price will go down… and if it doesn’t, I am labeling Sony insane. 2- It gives you time to see every feature of the PS3 (which could have flaws), the Wii (which also could have flaws and the controller could drive people like me insane and would not buy it just because of the stupid controller) and the Xbox 360 and COMPARE them. That way you can get the best deal for you, and get which ever fits your needs. Now why am I being an idiot (possibly) and already having a one-track mind about PS3? I am all about the role-playing games and PlaySation in the console that has them. Being honest… Final Fantasy got me by itself and everything else? Well… just an added bonus ^_~    Sorry about the extremely large rant…

Here is the lowdown boys and girls. Sony IS in trouble. I own a 360 and have a reserve on both PS3 and Wii. I'm going to own all three. Don't mistake me though. Sony won't go bankrupt and throw up their hands and go the way of SEGA, Atari, Panasonic, Neo Geo, etc but they will find themselves in 3rd place in the console market. Keep in mind that the 3DO had state of the art graphics, a CD drive when everyone else had cartridge, a built-in hard drive, and a great lineup of games. However, a price point of more than $200-$300 over its rivals and a high price on games. Neo Geo met the same fate and in the handheld market runaway technology with low functionality and high price doomed multiple handhelds that opposed the Gameboy.
Sony is having problems with other divisions and they are notorious for letting the right hand being stabbed cause the left one to bleed. The bluray system while superior in almost every respect currently has a max read speed of 2-4x. This will undoubtedly change in the future, but it will be too late for the already designed PS3, meaning once again, incredibly long load times.
But here is the meat of the argument. We all know that if there are any groups of people in the world have money to throw around its the American and Japanese people. Fanboys/techies like myself will run out and throw down the 600 dollars if we are able to find a system to throw it down on. I have no idea about supply line issues but the manager of the local Gamestop who I have gotten to know pretty well said that Sony would only have a million units available worldwide for launch. What will undoubtedly happen is that parents will be forced to buy a Wii/360 and promise a PS3 later. The question for Sony is "Will heavy wallet toting hardcore adult gamers be so into the PS3 that it will offset the amount of kids and preteens without rich parents who simply cannot afford the system cost and dont have HD tv's to see this incredible improvement in their gaming experience

First off, I want to thank everyone for commenting!  The conversation has gotten very good and intelligent!  I really appreciate that.
1.  Our poor friend and their puzzle game issue, that game is currently unavailable.  We are waiting for it to be repaired and will put it back up as soon as possible.

2.  Sony I think will have a great system.  There is no doubt about that.  The doubt arises in the fact that it will be very expensive and unavailable.   Sure,  adults have the money to drop coin on serious hardware.  There is no doubt about that.  The thing is to appeal to the masses.  Right now,  Sony's offering does not appeal to the masses.  With the console so expensive,  the items needed to maximize its power so expensive,  how can they expect to re-coup the investment?  They are on the ropes right now and having to wait is going to be tough for them.  Sony is a HUGE mult-national company and isn't going to vanish,  that is for sure.  It is surely going to be interesting.

ps3 is gonna do ok but not as good as the 360. u can buy the 360 and wii for almost the same price as the ps3.also gears of war is living up to its hype as the ps3 killer.from every website i have saw it has gotten at least a 9.5 and is the new bar 4 next-gen gaming.also there arent really any ps3 launch games that are very intrigueing other than resistance:fal of man and oblivion which u can get on the 360 anyway.each system has their own trademark for example:360-halo3;great online;great games  ps3-blu-ray disk;mgs4   wii-controller and i mean c'mon baby MARIO and ZELDA!

i think the blu-ray disk fails in this regard Bcuz sony is putting thier neck on the line 4 something normal gamers have never heard of and doesnt really seem like a big deal 2 them.Hmm?$200 dollars extra or a 2 disc set 4 really long games.id go with the 2nd one.btw i own a 360 and really like it but if ur not planning on getting online take sum time exploring other options.

basketbqt4eva,
Awesome post.  I love it.  I tend to agree with you.  I just played Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3 and yes,  its good but not mind blowing.  It looks as good as anything thing thats out there right now.  I just don't see that its a slam dunk worth paying $600  for.

What if the 360 went to 129 dollars?

Well I think Sony is doing better than both Nintendo and Microsoft combined. Even though Microsoft has a superior Operating System thats above all others-Windows, and Nintendo has an unique edge in game making, they still lack the game making quality that Sony has introduced to the world of gaming. The PS3 has many new features that makes all others look like garbage even it's own brother and sister the PS2 and PSone it's online capabilities have been pushed to the limit, you can now surf the web wirelessly on your TV. Also the PS3 plays three different types of data storages:DVD, Blu-ray, CD (compact disk). This means you can play all your old and new PS2 and old PSone video games one this baby,PLUS! You can watch DVDs, and play your favorite music using audio CDs. The body look of the PS3 has a unique design as well. It has two version like the X-box 360, a 20 Gigabyte Hard drive or Hard Disk, and a 60 Gig one. Compare it to the 360 whereas it only has one version that haves a Hard drive the premium one. Which has about 80 Gigs. I still think there could be a tie between Sony and Microsoft they seem to be at a higher level than Nintendo since they also produce computers, etc. But for now Sony is in the lead and may stay foreve. Visit there sites and explore. The prices are as follows:     360: REGULAR-300, PREMIUM-400 the PS3 is a little higher:REGULAR-500, PREMIUM-600 all in American dollars.

I also forgot to say that PS3 is the best of the TV based systems while PSP is the best handheld. Peice.
